SPCA Foster Program
The NWT SPCA is in desperate need of foster homes. We have many many animals that need safe loving homes for stays of a few days to a few weeks. We are looking for people who can care for animals awaiting permanent adoption or transport to another rescue organization. Sometimes placement is needed on a short notice. If you are interested in becoming a foster parent or for more information on the foster program, please download the foster application package or go to the contact page and send us an email.
Spay and Neuter Rebate Program
This program is intended to assit pet owners who adopt from the NWT SPCA with the cost of a spay or neuter. When you adopt a puppy or kitten from us they are not sterilized as they are too young. It is required however by the age of 6 months that you fullfill the adoption contract with us and get that procedure done. This rebate helps with the cost of that. We offer a 30% rebate on sterilization of your pet that was adopted from the NWT SPCA.

Northern Dog Transfer Network
Every year we save an average of 230 dogs by transporting them out of the communities of the NWT. Some stay here in the Territory but most are flown out to the southern rescue organizations that can foster and adopt them into great homes. This Network of organizations is an incredible chain of caring organizations and individuals with a passion for saving as many dogs as possible. Without these wonderful people many dogs would not be alive today or would be suffering greatly.
This network includes- Pawsitive Match, Red Deer & Region SPCA, ARTS, HEART, Vancouver Canine Services, Safe at Last Dog Rescue and 780 Kennels. We also get tremendous support from First Air and AIr Tindi. Without these airlines we would not be able to get the dogs out.

HERO Campaign
The HERO Campaign is a way for people to SAVE a dog without the responsibilities that come along with ownership. For $75 (the average cost of a one-way ticket) you can sponsor a dog to fly south to a partner facility, or for $150 you can sponsor a dog to fly to Yellowknife from Inuvik, Cambridge Bay, Rankin Inlet, or any number of the smaller communities in The NWT or Nunavut. This is for dogs who have been impounded for an extended period of time, older dogs, and dogs with behavioural issues that temporarily prevent them from being adopted. It also includes many puppies forwhom the winter and harsh climate of the North would be a death sentence.
If you are interested in saving a dog and becoming a HERO, contact us! Click here to see some of the dogs that have been sent down south from NWT and Nunavut since 2010.

Spay and Neuter Loan Program
The NWT SPCA can provide an interest free loan to help with the spaying or neutering of your cat or dog (not including vaccinations). The loan must be repaid within one year and each loan can only be applied to one animal. Once you have repaid your loan, you may apply again for assistance with another animal. Costs vary depending on the size of the animal and its medical condition. A spay or neuter operation could cost anywhere between $200 and $400. Vaccinations for a cat or dog will cost up to $100 and will NOT be covered by this loan.
To apply for the Loan Program complete the application form and send it, along with your cheque for $25 to the NWT SPCA at the address on the form. If your application is approved, we will fax the approval form directly to the Great Slave Animal Hospital and you can then contact them to schedule your pet's surgery.

St. John's Ambulance Therapy Dog Program
The Therapy Dog Program is run by St. John Ambulance in Yellowknife. Any dog of sound temperament can become a Therapy Dog, regardless of size or breed, once they pass the St. John Therapy Dog test. All volunteers must be able to make the commitment of time to visit on a regular basis. They must also be willing to participate in a screening process, which includes a criminal record check.
Evaluation sessions are held to test dogs on obedience and temperament. Testing consists of a heeling pattern to show control when walking, a sit and down stay, noise distraction, greeting a friendly stranger, reaction to other dogs, interaction with wheelchairs, accepting a treat from a stranger, a patient draped in a robe and a crowd petting the dog.
Once the dog and handler have passed the test they're ready to visit their designated facility under supervised visits.
Therapy Dogs offer unconditional love and friendship to the sick, lonely and helpless. Dogs are non-judgmental. They are undeterred by human frailties and accept human illness, handicap or disfigurement, confusion or tears. They calm the distressed, distract the pain-ridden, and comfort the despondent. They, in return, are often accepted when humans are rejected. If you are interested in the program and would like more info, contact:
Cindy or Heather at St John Ambulance 873-5658 or email ykadmin@nt.sja.ca
