Obedience and Agility Training

Picture
Rruff Diamonds Dog Agility Club is a not-for-profit society registered in the NWT. The small group of volunteer coaches and participants organize dog agility practices during the summer months of May through September. Agility is an exciting recreational activity in which dogs maneuver through an obstacle course, guided by their human handler.
Beginner Agility lessons start in May. Registration for these lessons starts in February. Information is posted on the NWT SPCA website.  Class size is limited.
Practices take place at the Tommy Forrest Ball Field. The Club has all the proper dog agility equipment. Some members and their dogs have participated in competitions in the south. The club has brought up professional trainers for lessons and fun meets. The Club holds an annual fun meet on Labour Day weekend. For more information: http://www.rruffdiamondsdogagility.ca

Dog Walking Areas (On and Off Leash)

OFF LEASH AREAS

Yellowknife Dog Park

Picture

The first and only fenced, safe, off-leash park for dogs in the NWT!
Location: Behind the Yellowknife Curling Club
Directions: Park between the swimming pool and arena and walk south on the access road (but not along the frame lake trail). You will see the fenced area.

The Sand Pits

Open area used by multiple users. Sand area with small ponds dotted all over the area. Be wary of snowmobilers, dirt bikes, off road cars and trucks, off leash dogs, and horseback riders.
Location: About 3 km west of the airport.
Directions: Drive down 49th street towards school draw. From the airport drive approximately 3 km, on the left there will be a sign for YK Shooting range, turn in there, park
.

Tin Can Hill

Open area used by multiple users. Be wary of snowmobilers, cyclists, off leash dogs and broken glass.
Location: Just off of School Draw Ave
Directions: Drive down 49th street towards school draw. At the corner of School Draw turn right into a dead end. There is a dirt road leading up the hill which is the off-leash area.
Pick up after your dog

YK Ski Club

Use only in the summer - absolutely restricted in the winter!

Somewhat swampy in places but great views if you go off the trails onto the rock. Pick up after your dog - the ski club would be very upset if they had to clean up any poop!
Location: Ingraham Trail, about 1 km from the Explorer Hotel
Directions: Drive North on the Ingraham trail and it will be on your right just before the dump. It's well marked with signs.
Please remember in ALL areas to pick up after your dog!
Trails and off leash areas are for everyone so please pack your baggies!!

ON LEASH WALKING TRAILS

Range Lake Trail

Groomed trail used by multiple users
Location: Range Lake
Directions: Can be accessed from Rivett Crescent or from Parker Park Ball diamonds. Keep dogs on leash. Pick up after your dog. This area might be taken away from us if we're not responsible.

Prelude Lake Nature Trail

Incredible nature hike through flat sand, high rock and bush. Lots of climbing through rock areas to incredible views of Prelude Lake. Make sure to wear hikers. Takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Garbage cans available entrance only. Not very well used and usually you're the only one on the trail! Great spots for picnics. Dogs should be leashed. There are bears in the area so please make sure you and your dog are – at the very least - wearing bear bells.
Location: Ingraham Trail
Directions: Drive north on Ingraham Trail for about 30 minutes. Turn left into Prelude Lake park, it is well marked with a large sign. Drive to the first parking lot - one surrounded by a wood fence. There is a map in that area of the trail and it is well marked - just keep your eyes peeled for the markers because there are a couple of tricky spots.

Frame Lake Trail

Groomed Trail - takes approximately 2 hours to walk the entire trail. Dogs shouldn't swim in the lake. Risk of infection! Highly populated trail, both paved and bush. Garbage cans are few and far between but are available near City Hall, the pool and the hospital. Keep dogs on leash. Pick up after your dog. This area might be restricted to dogs if we're not responsible
Location: Frame Lake
Directions: Many accesses available - across from the Co-Op, behind the pool, city hall, the museum and Gitzel Street.

Niven Lake Trail

Very nice nature trail around wetland area. Many kinds of waterfowl and other birds. Do not let your dog chase birds or go in the water. Garbage cans available at the two entrances. Pick up after your dog and keep them on leash. This is a highly populated residential area with lots of dogs in backyards.
Location: Ingraham Trail
Directions: Drive north on Ingraham Trail. Not well marked but you will see a wooded bridge which is where you can park.

It's Cuter to Neuter!
